Target group and learning objectives

comments ThijssenThe course "Electronic Resources and Electronic Publishing" aimed at library managers/directors, IT or systems librarians, licensing officers, and digital library project managers from academic and research libraries. The course was also highly relevant for publishers.

Participants left the course with:

  • sound knowledge of the current changes in the information chain and possible roles and opportunities for libraries;
  • insight into the strategies of other (commercial and scholarly) players on the market;
  • knowledge of relevant copyright issues and of different approaches to licensing and consortium formation;
  • practical techniques of negotiating with suppliers;
  • knowledge of a selected number of technological issues in electronic publishing.
The following themes were covered:
  • changes in the information chain and trends in e-publishing;
  • library consortia: success, realism, myths, and second thoughts;
  • IT trends and developments;
  • changing views on copyright issues;
  • licensing options;
  • new roles of publishers on the Internet;
  • the art of negotiating;
  • electronic preprints: the Open Archives Initiative;
  • document servers in support of education and research;
  • open access in practice.
All lectures, workshops, and discussions were be English. Sharing of experiences among participants was essential and participants were expected to engage in high levels of interaction. It was, therefore, essential that they have a good command of the English language. All courses drew heavily on European and North American best practice.
