Svanhild Aabø:

I am associate professor of library and information science at Oslo University College. After graduating from the library school in Oslo in 1973, I worked in public and academic libraries as well as in publishing houses. In 1988, I received my master in library and information science and then worked several years at the national library with different bibliographical and IT-related projects. Today, my time is divided between research and teaching at the library and information science programme. Research interests include information economics and valuation of libraries. I am currently engaged in a research project exploring the value and benefits of the Norwegian public libraries.

Sefira Ajoeb:

I am trained as a librarian specialised to work in university and research libraries. After a few years of working in this specific sector, I made a switch to the world of public libraries. Here I worked for more than ten years as a general manager of several libraries. When I became a mother, I took a break of 4 years from my professional career to take care of my two kids. In 1989 I started a new job at ENDEMOL (a leading television production company), where I got the task of setting up a department on document and information management. Management of information in a structured way was something quite new in this hectic televsionproduction environment. The department started with only myself as staff, but by the time I left it had a staff of seven fulltime members. In 2000 I once again made a move, this time to work for a public broadcasting company, TROS. I now have the opportunity to see and understand the process of television and radio making from the other side, the viewpoint of the broadcaster. I work at the Department of Information Services, where I am responsible for the unit Company Archives.

Mikel Goedhoop:

I have a university degree in communication and succesfully finished the post doc course 'Integraal document management' at the Erasmus University. I have been employed on a wide scale of jobs in the past, ranging from marketing and industrial planning to communications. Mostly staff and management, both in a commercial and non profit environment. Mainly in governement institutions. In my previous job I was invited by the management to reform and reorganise the inhouse information services and libraries. After the reform was accomplished succesfully, I joined this new departement as an information consultant/advisor. With the new information departement now in function for a year and a half, we expect that we will be required to produce management information any day now, as well as to present parameters by which our performance can be judged and benchmarked against other in-house information services. With this course I hope to gain inside and skills to anticipate on this demand. I personally also see this as an opportunity to get better equipped for management.

I also segment the market; research institutes can now be profiled by a number of indicators. To name a few important ones: turn over data (invoice information), usage data (ScienceDirect web logs), population data (students and faculty research staff) and article output (from ISI). This assists in offering relevant scientific information / new products to prospective customers. I also analyse emerging markets in my region; the output and quality of academic research in Russia, the Balkan and some Middle Eastern countries is developing quite fast, and this of course has our interest. Before Elsevier, I worked as a Project Manager at a small Internet start up that develops intra-/extranets and web applications for medical and patient societies in the Netherlands. Before that, I worked as an Information Broker at the Scientific Information Department of DSM-Gist in Delft, largest producer of raw penicillin in the world, where I led several innovative library projects.
