Digital Libraries a la Carte: New Choices for the Future

Course director: Michael L. Breaks

Michael Breaks has been University Librarian of Heriot-Watt University since 1985, having previously worked in both subject and managerial roles in university libraries in England, Wales and Ireland. Michael L. BreaksHe was an early pioneer of digital services and Heriot-Watt has produced the Internet Resources Newsletter for over 12 years. He has been a member of a number of UK policy-making committees in the area of networked information, including the Board of Management of UKERNA (the company which runs the JANET network), was a member of the funding councils' Libraries Review (Follett) IT Committee and has been a member of some JISC Committees, including the Committee on Electronic Information and the Advisory Committee on Networking. He has also chaired the national JANET User Group.

Michael is currently Chair of the JISC-funded Archives Hub Steering Committee, President of IATUL (International Association of Technological University Libraries), Director of EEVL: the Internet Guide to Engineering, Mathematics and Computing Information, which is part of the JISC-funded Resource Discovery Network (RDN). He is a trustee of Eduserv which provides a range of services to both higher and further education, including Athens and CHEST. He has written and spoken frequently on networked information and on Internet subject gateways, and is the editor the annual New Review of Information Networking, published by Taylor and Francis.

Programme committee

Rachel Bruce, Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), is Programme Director for the Information Environment. This includes developing policy and development programmes for digital repositories, preservation and machine services for digital libraries across the UK higher and further education sector. Rachel is an Information Scientist and has worked on a number of national and international programmes and services. These include the UK based HE Archives Hub and the JISC and National Science Foundation (NSF) Digital Libraries Programme amongst others. Rachel’s main interests include interoperability across digital resources and scholarly communications processes and systems.

Jenny Levine is the Internet Development Specialist at the Metropolitan Library System, the consortial headquarters for more than 900 academic, public, school, and special libraries in the Chicagoland area. In this role, one of her main goals is to educate member librarians about new technologies and how they can improve services to their patrons.

Balviar Notay is a Programme Manager for the Portals, Presentation and Resource Discovery Programmes at the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the UK. So far the Portals Programme has developed portal projects in media, subject and community formats. The Presentation Programme aims to investigate and discover how different types of resources can be presented within a variety of web environments in ways that best benefit users.

Jola Prinsen has worked at Ticer as Deputy Manager since 1995. Before that, she worked at Tilburg University library as information specialist, head of the computer science documentation centre, head fee-based information services, and PR and communications officer. Jola has been involved in programming Ticer courses since the first Summer School in 1996.

After studying monetary economics at Tilburg University, Hans Roes worked as a teacher and student counsellor at Tilburg University, before joining the university library. In several capacities he was involved in and managed projects in library innovation, electronic publishing and e-learning. Hans works also a senior consultant for Ticer. Since November 2005, Hans is Director of Information Resources and Multimedia at the International University Bremen.
