9:00 hrs Project ANGEL: The VLE and the library (QZ 105)

  • the growing use of virtual learning environments in learning and teaching in UK higher education
  • the distinction between content management and its presentation by web delivery systems
  • the way in which academic libraries should be involved in the development of these environments
  • the ANGEL project and the architecture of the ANGEL system
  • overlap between virtual learning environments and electronic reserve systems in libraries
  • the requirement that academic libraries assert their role as resource information managers in their institutions
  • partnership between academic librarians and course tutors

  • the issues associated with the students entering education today in relation to new technologies
  • the work of The Managed Learning Environment Steering Group (MLESG) in the UK, documents the advice / guidance being produced, and the changes being made in institutions to make best use of the new technology
  • a functional specification of a typical environment, and the difference between MLEs and VLEs
  • the standards and specifications being used in the education sector, and work being undertaken to embed these
  • the issues that need to be addressed for future success and potential pitfalls along the way
  • Richard's view on the cultural, managerial and pedagogical challenges that will face the education sector in implementing such environments for learning
