The "Leaders' Visions on the Library of the Future" course aimed at directors, other senior managers, and those aspiring to these positions, from academic/research libraries and from computer centres. The course also targeted senior managers from publishing houses.
Leading speakers talked about strategic issues, presenting their visions for the coming 3 to 5 years. These visions were discussed, and thus managers were enabled to anticipate trends when planning and formulating their library policy. The subject was approached from different points of view, the chief ones being
- IT developments relevant to libraries
- the future of electronic publishing, e-learning, and e-science
- supporting collaborative work
- better focused services: customisation and personalisation
- keeping up with the customer: user behaviour, usage, and statistics
- the problems of e-only and digital archiving
- surviving is co-operating
- organisational and staff development
- strategic planning in the 21st century
The future role and focus of various types of libraries were discussed, including university libraries, research libraries, corporate libraries, and national libraries. The course ass an ideal opportunity to get a broad view of where libraries are heading, in just two days.
